Follow Up from BOD Meeting

Hello APTA Geriatrics Committee/SIG and other leaders. I wanted to take a moment to share with you a brief update from the board meeting earlier this month. I will be sharing similar information in an email to the membership soon, but wanted you to have this if you wished to share any portion with your group.
Questions or comments- please send my way or to your board liaison.

  • The BOD read and had a discussion about “Brave Leadership Is a Choice” (https://braveleadershipchoice.com/ )
    • Key takeaways included:
      • Belonging is part of DEI issues and applies to everyone
      • Introspection is important starting place for understanding how to create a culture of belonging including identifying your core values and how they apply to leadership
      • Being rooted in core values helps to make personal, professional and association decisions
      • When people feel they belong- they can focus on doing the work of the association and be comfortable in their uniqueness
    • Concepts of belonging and more focus on creating that for membership will be part of next strategic plan
  • Knowledge Translation materials will be using a “5 M’s framework” (Mentation (or Mind)/Mobility/Medications/Matters Most/Multi-complexity) Learn more here: Tip Sheet: The 5Ms of Geriatrics | HealthInAging.org
  • Online communities launch before end of year (to general membership) including customizing notification preferences.
  • Met with APTA staff (Justin and staff) to update each other and determine where we can combine resources or support each other.
  • Governance task force was created to provide a report and recommendations to the BOD to align with non-profit best practices in governance. Members may get a survey about our nominations and elections process as well as overall governance.
  • Several sections and Academies are discussing dues increase. At this time the BOD determined that APTA Geriatrics dues would not change in 2024. We continue to evaluate annually how to best use association resources.
  • Growth in student members continues although slowing as many convert to PT members! Please continue to encourage your students to join and learn more about us.
  • GCS recognition options for CSM will again have space limitations that prohibit a breakfast at a reasonable hour. Look for new ways to celebrate our new clinical specialists!
  • Board discussed the term “geriatrics” and are working to develop a white paper.
